Would you like to add your story to the “largest collection of human voices ever gathered?” StoryCorps can help!

Join us in The Great Thanksgiving Listen.

StoryCorps is committed to the idea that everyone has an important story to tell and that everyone’s story matters. Our mission: to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time. Since our founding in 2003, we’ve helped nearly 700,000 people across the country have meaningful conversations about their lives. These recordings are collected in the U.S. Library of Congress and in our online archive which is now the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit, sharing select stories with the public through weekly broadcasts, our podcast, animated shorts, digital platforms, and best-selling books.

The website has general directions and some GREAT questions!

If you are interviewing a writer, the Writing Group for Adults suggests the following questions:

  • When did you first think you wanted to write?
  • When did you first put pen to paper?
  • What inspires you to write?
  • What genre do you write? How did you choose it?
  • Where do you write?
  • Do you write with music? If so, what kind of music?
  • What medium do you use to write? (computer, journal, phone, etc?)
  • How do you organize your thoughts?
  • Are you a planner (follows a plan you have written), a planter (some planning, some going off on a tangent), pantser (you sit down; you write-not a lot of planning).
  • Where do you get your ideas?
  • Are you friendly with the voice in your head?
  • How do you define and name your characters?
  • What’s your favorite story/poem so far that you’ve written?
  • Who are your favorite authors? Whom does your writing emulate?
  • For whom are you writing?
  • Do you keep pen and paper by the bed or car?
  • Are you obsessed with pens/pencils/paper/computer apps/journals?
  • Do you work on multiple projects at a time? (i.e. do you rotate the crops?) What advice do you have for writers and writer wannabes? What's your favorite dictionary? (Yes, that's really old school.)
  • How long have you been writing? Are you glad you started? Do you have a beta reader/editor?
